Document Everything

The first step is to make sure everything is documented.

Importantly, you should call the police immediately so they can investigate and write a car accident crash report. The police officer on scene may also issue a citation to the at-fault driver, which can assist you with your personal injury claim by proving the liability of the at-fault party.

The police will also collect the at-fault party’s insurance information and will take statements and contact information from any witnesses to the car accident.

If you are able, take photos of the scene and the damage to your vehicle. If you have visible injuries, take photos of your injuries.

Seek Medical Treatment

Next, make sure you get medical treatment so your injuries can be evaluated. Most people who have been injured in a car accident will go to the local emergency room to be evaluated by a physician.

The ER doctor can order tests such as a X-rays, a CT Scan, or an MRI to ensure your injuries are properly diagnosed. From there, you may need surgery, physical therapy, or to be referred to a specialist.

Don’t talk to the Insurance Company

Sometimes, the insurance company calls injured people while they are vulnerable and tries to offer them a low-ball settlement to resolve the claim before an attorney gets involved. As part of the deal, they may try and get you to make a recorded statement regarding what happened during the car accident.

Don’t fall for this trick! The insurance company only has one thing in mind when making these calls: minimizing their financial exposure. The insurance company doesn’t care about you–they only care about their bottom line and their shareholders.
